On the maternal side, Mrs Rajinder Kaur Bali was the granddaughter of Bhai Sahib Bhai Vir Singh. 

Born into a highly cultured and literary family, the only sister of five brothers, Rajinder grew up a tomboy. Her father and grandfather had high aspirations for her. She excelled in her studies, graduating at the top of her class in law at Delhi University when few women went to college. Rajinder became a successful banker. She joined the Punjab & Sindh Bank, which her grandfather, Bhai Sahib Bhai Vir Singh, had founded. She retired as a director of the Corporation Bank, now Union Bank of India. 

Rajinder was passionate about promoting her grandfather's work and was a member of the Bhai Vir Singh Sahitya Sadan in New Delhi. Rajinder penned her grandfather's memoirs and published poems inspired by him. She spread the word about his contribution to Punjabi literature through talks she gave in U.S.A., Australia, Malaysia and the U.K.
