Iqbal Singh m Mel Kaur Bedi
Iqbal Singh Nalwa went to medical school in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1912. He earned the M.B., Ch.B. degree in 1917. On returning home, he joined the Indian Medical Service in the armed forces in 1918 as a Lieutenant. He was promoted to Captain in 1919 and posted as the Medical Officer 1st Yemen Infantry, Aden, during the First World War.
In 1934, Major Iqbal Singh Nalwa, IMS, was the Superintendent of Rangoon Jail, Burma. By 1938, Lieut.-Colonel Iqbal Singh Nalwa, M.B., Ch.B. (Edn), IMS, was officiating as the Superintendent of Jails and Inspector-General of Prisons, Rangoon, Burma.
Lt. Col. Nalwa died in a road accident in 1948 in Kashmir. In 1950, the Red Cross Society of India instituted the 'Nalwa Medal' in memory of Lt. Col. I.S. Nalwa. The medal is for distinguished service by a trained nurse, nursing aide, health visitor, or an organiser of nursing camps.
Iqbal Singh Nalwa was married to Mel Kaur Bedi and had a live-in relationship with Winnie, an Englishwoman.
