Dr B S Bedi Former DGP belongs to the 1961 batch of IPS (UP Cadre). He was born at Daska in Sialkot district of present Pakistan. After partition the family settled at Sirhind in Punjab, India. He was a good student and received several academic awards during his school and college days. His keen interest in academics and passion for English literature served as a base for the Civil Services preparation. Before his selection into the Indian Police Service, he taught at a postgraduate college for nearly three years.

During his illustrious career as a police officer, he was handpicked for a series of important and challenging postings. Dr. Bedi proved his mettle as an outstanding, fearless and honest officer, who due to his balanced and effective style of policing, was respected both in the political as well as bureaucratic circles. He earned deep respect of his police force as well as the public wherever he served. Considered one of the most dynamic and legendary IPS officers of his time, he was selected for two Inter State deputations ‐ first as DIG Jalandhar Range in 1985 during the height of militancy in Punjab, and then in 1992 as DGP Jammu and Kashmir where he was given the responsibility of tackling the grave situation arising out of uncontrolled militant activities. After his police career Dr. Bedi served as Member, UP Public Service Commission and thereafter returned to the world of academics. He has fulfilled his long cherished dream of research in English Literature that has earned him a PhD degree followed by the coveted   D Litt degree.
