Sixty-two cars from 9 countries participated in the rally, which took drivers through one of the world's tortuous routes, across 6,800 kilometres, starting from Teheran (Iran) and ending in Dacca (then East Pakistan, now Bangladesh) via Kathmandu (Nepal), passing through five countries - Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and Nepal. The rally was the second in a series sponsored by the U.N. Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East (ECAFE) to promote trade and tourism in Asia by publicizing improved road networks.
